Our Story

As the need to help the homeless population in Charlotte continues to grow, CEH has come to the aid of homeless families since 1985. CEH’s home-like shelter (Plaza Place) can house 14 families at a time, allowing them to stay together and support each other during this traumatic time in their lives. CEH is one of the few shelters in the community which accomodates the entire family, including fathers and teenage boys. Residents of CEH have their own bedroom and bathroom and access to the following shared areas: kitchens, dining room, living room, computer area and laundry facility. On top of that, CEH has its own four-star child care center (Rainbow Room) within the facility for day care and after-school care for the children (0-12 years) of the residents. Furthermore, CEH provides social work family support, family counseling, and transitional services for up to one year after the family has left the shelter. This helps to ensure that their employment and permanent housing remain stable.

Families served by CEH overwhelmingly leave the shelter further along their path to self-reliance. The large majority of families leave with jobs and housing in place. With over 150 individuals helped annually, 2/3 of them children, CEH has an impact on many families in the community who continue to rise above the difficult sitautions that helped bring them to CEH.

No one, especially children, deserves to be homeless. Let’s work to ensure all Charlotte families have a safe, decent and affordable place to call home.
